On July 11, 1897,fico scientist Salomon August Andrée, engineer Knut Frænkel and photographer Nils Strindberg embarked on the Örnen, a hot air balloon with which they intended to explore the North Pole. The incredible expedition, followed with passionate interest by the Swedish society of the time, had a fatal outcome: after three days of flight, the balloon descended until it fell into an ice bank and the three intrepid adventurers survived for a few months until they died.
