Paul Crutzen, who received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for identifying how nitrogen oxides erode the Earth's ozone layer and discovering the chemical processes that cause the ozone hole, defined the Anthropocene by stating that 'in today's world and in the immediate future, what happens on the planet has a lot to do with what human beings do.
