David Grossman's new novel focuses on three strong women with character: Vera, in her nineties, her daughter Nina, and her granddaughter, Guili, 39, who is the one who tells the story. It's 2008 and the family celebrates Vera's ninetieth birthday. For decades, a dark secret has strangled the lives of these women and pushed them to confront each other until, finally, they decide to travel to Goli Otok, an island off the coast of Croatia.
