The infamous transport of Africans to America by enslaved ser , during the first two thirds of the nineteenth century, ser a widespread practice among Catalan sailors. To exercise it, it was necessary to escape the persecution of British ships, expose oneself to serious tropical diseases, corrupt the Spanish authorities and negotiate with despotic local African chiefs who had to provide the slaves.
